Duane Allman is suspected to play on tracks 1 & 2.
Here are a few little snippets from these tracks, where Duane might be heard:
1. | Snatching It Back (mono)
2. | Snatching It Back (stereo)
3. | Making Love (At The Dark End Of The Street) (mono)
4. | Making Love (At The Dark End Of The Street) (stereo) |
On page 14 of Michael Buffalo Smith's book "Capricorn Rising" (Mercer University Press, Macon, GA, 2016) Gregg Allman talks about the song 'Dark End Of The Street' that he recorded for his ‘Searching For Simplicity’ album. And he also tells that Duane recorded it with Clarence Carter.
On March 22, 2014 Scott Cantor spoke with David Hood (in the 1960's studio bassist for FAME and also co-founder of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio) and Jimmy Johnson (in the 1960's studio guitarist and sound engineer for Rick Hall's FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL. and in 1969 co-founder of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio). They confirmed that Duane Allman does not play on the album Testifyin'.
We have checked the recording dates for
this album on the tape ledgers from the Atlantic Records archive and on
https://www.jazzdisco.org/atlantic-records/discography-1969/
and we found out that 8 tracks for the LP Testifyin' were recorded on May 2,
1969 and May 13, 1969 at Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL.
Duane Allman doesn't play on these tracks, because after February 1969 he didn't
record at Fame anymore.
But the Atlantic Records tape ledgers, and
https://www.jazzdisco.org/atlantic-records/discography-1968/
also show that 3 tracks for this LP were recorded earlier.
‘Back Door Santa’ was recorded on October 3, 1968 at Fame Recording Studios
during the sessions for the LP 'The Dynamic Clarence Carter'.
And the tracks 'Snatching It Back' and 'Making Love (At The Dark End Of The
Street)' were recorded on January 6, 1969, and it were the only 2 tracks
recorded on that day.'
On the Testifyin' LP Albert Lowe, Jimmy Johnson
and Clarence Carter are listed as the guitar players.
On page 142 of her book 'Please Be With Me - A Song For My Dather, Duane Allman'
(Spiegel & Grau, New York, NY, 2014) Galadrielle Allman published a part of
Duane's diary:
- January 3, 1969 Clarence Carter session. Clarence canceled today. Moved
into my lake crib and it’s a gas. Spent the day fixing it a little.
- January 4, 1969 Clarence Carter session
- January 5, 1969 Clarence Carter session – Leave for New York for Aretha
Franklin session.
First part of session terrible. Couldn’t get Rick [Fame Studios owner and
producer Rick Hall] to accept new idea for guitar parts. The other cats said
I was learning fast when this happened. What a drag.
- January 6, 1969 Begin Aretha Franklin session.
So it seems the recording date for those 2 tracks was not January 6, 1969, but
January 4 & 5, 1969. The master numbers were probably assigned on January 6.
But what happened on January 4 & 5 ? Now we know that Duane was there. Did he
play on these tracks or didn’t he play at all? Or was his contribution erased
from the tapes?
